Since 2012, the N.C. Arts Council has provided staff resources, public art consultants and significant funds for the Durham SmART Vision Plan.

Durham Arts Council is the local lead agency for the Durham SmART Vision Plan, and applied to the North Carolina Arts Council in 2011, proposing a plan to connect arts and cultural asset “hub” areas in Durham through creative placemaking with public art, wayfinding, pedestrian amenities, and exciting urban landscape design and lighting. 

Additionally, Durham SmART is supported by a prestigious National Endowment for the Arts “Our Town” Grant; grants and technical support from the City of Durham; financial and staff support from the Durham Arts Council; additional grant support from Capitol Broadcasting Company, Durham County, Duke University, Nasher Museum of Art, and Downtown Durham, Inc., plus technical support from Durham Area Designers, and the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Over 26 local, regional, state and national partners have been engaged in this major SmART vision plan in Durham since 2012.
